Three lines a night: a journal for people who hate journals

Three lines a night: a journal for people who hate journals

What happened, what you noticed, what you are letting go of. That is the whole format.

Most people who tell us they hate journals have tried the kind with prompts about gratitude and goals, kept it up for a week, and then felt guilty every time they saw the notebook. This is a different kind. It is three lines, and it takes less time than brushing your teeth.

The three lines

Line one is what happened: one plain fact from the day. Line two is what you noticed: a sound, a feeling in your body, something small you would normally miss. Line three is what you are letting go of tonight.

That is the whole format. No dates required, no full sentences, no reading it back unless you want to.

“The third line is the one that helps you sleep.”

Why it works

Writing a fact, a noticing and a release is a small version of what we practise on the cushion: see what is there, pay attention to it, then put it down.

Because it is so short, it survives bad days. On the night you are too tired for anything, you can still manage three lines, and those are the nights it matters most.

Try it tonight

Three lines before sleep

1

Keep a small notebook by the bed, not the phone.

2

Write one thing that happened today.

3

Write one thing you noticed.

4

Write one thing you are letting go of, then turn out the light.

When you skip a night

You will. Just write tomorrow's three lines tomorrow. Nobody is grading the notebook, and a gap of a week is still a notebook.

The 8-week course uses a version of this journal between sessions, so you can see how your weeks change.
