Three pauses that fit a busy calendar

Three pauses that fit a busy calendar

Before you open email, before a meeting, before you leave. Each one takes a minute.

Most people who say they have no time to meditate are right: they have no free half hour. But almost everyone has three minutes, spread across the day in places they already stop. These three pauses fit inside a calendar that is already full.

Before you open email

Sit down at your desk and do nothing for one minute before you touch the keyboard. Feel your feet on the floor, your weight in the chair and three slow breaths moving in and out.

It sounds too small to matter. In practice it changes how you read the first message of the day, which often sets the tone for the next hour.

“A minute is long enough to notice you are rushing.”

Before a meeting

In the corridor or while the call connects, take one long breath out, longer than the breath in. Drop your shoulders. Notice what you are expecting from the next half hour.

You will walk in a little less braced. Several of the teams we work with now start meetings with a shared minute of quiet, and say the meetings got shorter.

Try it this week

Three pauses, three minutes

1

Set three reminders: first thing, before your busiest meeting and before you leave.

2

When one goes off, stop what you are doing.

3

Take three slow breaths with a longer out-breath.

4

Notice one thing you can hear, then carry on.

Before you leave

Before you shut the laptop, take a minute to notice what you are carrying home. Name it silently, then close the screen and leave it on the desk.

If your team would like to try this together, we run thirty-minute sessions on site and online.
