You already have a ten-minute ritual you never skip. You fill the kettle, wait for it, pour, wait again and drink. Most of us spend those minutes scrolling or planning. Tea meditation is simply doing the same thing with your attention on it.
Boiling the water
Fill the kettle and stay with it instead of walking away. Listen to the sound change as the water heats: the first tick of the metal, the rush, the rumble just before it boils.
If your mind goes to the day ahead, notice that it has gone and bring it back to the sound. That is the whole practice, repeated as often as you need.
“The kettle is a better teacher than most apps. It will not let you rush it.”
Pouring and waiting
Pour slowly and watch the colour come out of the leaves. Feel the warmth of the cup in both hands while it steeps. Breathe in the steam.
Let the first sip be small. Notice the temperature, the taste at the front of your tongue and the taste that comes later. Then drink the rest the way you normally would.
Try it tomorrow
One cup, four steps
1
Put the phone in another room while the kettle boils.
2
Listen to the water until it boils.
3
Hold the cup in both hands while the tea steeps.
4
Take the first sip slowly and notice three things about it.
Making it yours
Coffee works just as well, and so does a glass of water. What matters is a daily ritual you will not skip, done once with full attention.
Our Wednesday tea sit does exactly this in a group, with a pot of something good and twenty minutes of quiet afterwards.
