Couples counseling in Room 1

Evening and Saturday sessions for two or more

Closer again, one session at a time.

Couples and family counseling for the argument that keeps coming back, the move, the new baby or the hard news. Both of you are heard, and nobody is taking sides.

How we work with two or more

Nobody wins the session. The relationship does.

Daniel and Leah trained in the Gottman method and emotionally focused therapy. Every couples and family session keeps the same three rules, whoever books it.

Session agreement

Ovel Counseling

No sides taken

Your therapist works for the relationship, not for whoever called first.

Time alone with each of you

Early on, each partner has one session alone, so nothing has to be said in front of the other first.

One thing to try at home

Every session ends with one small thing to practise before the next. Never a pile of worksheets.

What couples and families bring

The same fight, a different week.

One of you says

The other says

“You never listen.”

Communication

“You never ask.”

“I said sorry. What else do you want?”

Trust

“To stop checking your phone.”

“We’re fine, just busy.”

Closeness

“We live like roommates.”

“I’m doing everything.”

A new baby

“So am I.”

“They’re my kids.”

Blended families

“It’s my home too.”

“Just talk to us.”

Teens at home

“You’d only get angry.”

Heard yourselves on both sides? That is where the work starts.

Watch

What a first couples session feels like.

Daniel Reyes walks through a first session with two people who have never tried counseling, from the nervous hello to the plan for next week.

“Most couples are surprised how practical it is. We talk about Tuesday night, not their childhoods.”

Questions

What couples ask before the first call.

Most of the work is done together, with one session alone for each of you early on. If your partner is not ready, start on your own; many partners join later.
No. Your therapist works for the relationship. If one of you feels outnumbered, say so, and we change the pace.
Yes. Some couples come to decide, and some to end kindly and plan how to co-parent. Both are good reasons.
Yes, from 13. Teens have their own sessions and parents join every fourth week. What a teen says stays private, with the few exceptions we explain at the start.
Some plans cover it and some do not. We check yours on the free call and give a superbill for out-of-network claims.
Most couples come for 10 to 20 sessions, weekly at first, then every other week. We review progress together every four.

Feel unsafe at home?

Couples sessions are not the right first step. Call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 any hour, or 911 if you are in danger.

Book

Book a session for two.

One of you can book for both. Our intake coordinator calls to find a time that suits two diaries.
