Your First Session

Your first session, step by step.

From the first call to the end of the first fifty minutes, so nothing on the day is a surprise.

From first call to first session

Eight moments, none of them a test.

Most people are nervous before a first session, and nearly all of them say afterwards it was easier than they expected. Here is everything that happens, in order.

Before the day

Today

You ask

Book online or call. Our intake coordinator calls you back within two working days.

Within two days

A 15-minute call

What is going on, in your words, and what you can pay. We match you with one therapist.

The day before

Three short forms

About ten minutes by email. Skip any question you would rather answer in the room.

Five minutes early

The waiting room

Water, quiet, six seats facing the window. Your therapist comes to the door for you.

In the room

0:00

Hello, and privacy

How confidentiality works, and its few exceptions, before anything else.

0:10

What brings you in

In your words and at your pace. Your therapist asks a few questions along the way.

0:35

First thoughts

What your therapist noticed, and what might help. You say whether it sounds right.

0:45

A plan, or not

Whether to meet again, how often, and one small thing to try. No pressure to decide.

The paperwork

Three forms, about ten minutes.

They arrive by email the day before, on a secure page. You can also fill them in on paper in the waiting room.

About you

Contact details, what brings you in, any medication. Six minutes.

Consent to counseling

What we offer, fees and cancellations, in plain words. Two minutes.

Privacy notice

How your records are kept and who can see them. To read, not to sign.

Bring

Three things in your pocket.

Leave at home

Everything else.

Questions

Before your first session.

The questions people ask on the call the day before. Anything else, ring us.

In crisis right now?

Ovel is not a crisis service. Call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, any hour, or call 911 if you are in danger.

Yes, to the waiting room. For individual sessions your therapist sees you on your own, unless you agree otherwise at the start.
Tell us, or tell them. Changing therapist after a first session is common, and the next match is free of any awkwardness.
Only if you want to. Most first sessions stay with what is happening now.
Come anyway. The session still ends on time, so the next client is not kept waiting, and the fee stays the same.
