About

A small practice with one simple rule.

Since 2012 on Monroe Street in Madison: eleven licensed therapists, four rooms and a video studio, and a person, not a voicemail, on the first call.

Why Ovel

Two people facing each other, nothing in between.

Turn two chairs toward each other and look down at them from above: they make an oval, open at the top and the bottom. That is our name, and our whole idea of therapy. No couch, no desk between you, and a gap left on purpose for whatever is not ready to be said yet.

I opened Ovel in 2012 with two rooms and one rule: the first person you speak to is someone who works beside a therapist, never a voicemail. Fourteen years on we are eleven therapists, four rooms and a video studio. The rule has not changed.

A floor plan drawn around your privacy.

When we moved into Suite 2 in 2019, we rebuilt it before we painted it. Every wall, door and seat below is there so you can come and go without being seen.

Measured, not guessed

Every fourth session, we check it is working.

Two minutes, nine questions on mood, worry and how the sessions feel to you. You see the answers, and we read them together. If nothing has moved by session eight, we change the approach or help you find someone who fits better.

Honest about our limits

What we do not do, and who does.

A good practice knows where it stops. When what you need is outside our work, we tell you on the first call and hand you on with a name, not a website.

Not at Ovel

Where we send you

Crisis care

988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, by call or text at any hour, or 911 if you are in danger.

Prescribing medication

Your doctor or a psychiatrist. With your written consent, we keep them up to date.

Custody and court evaluations

A forensic psychologist. We share the names of three we trust in Dane County.

Day and residential programs

A program near you. Our intake team helps you find one and calls until you have a start date.
