Style

Blackwork

Solid black and hard contrast. The least fashionable style we do, and the one that survives longest without needing a touch up.

The style

Built out of shape, not out of detail.

Blackwork reads at distance. Where a realistic piece relies on detail that softens over a decade, blackwork relies on the shape of the black itself, which does not go anywhere.

It asks for commitment in return. Solid fill is slower to tattoo and slower to heal than line work, and covering it later is genuinely difficult. We would rather you sat with the drawing for a week than booked it the same day.

The plan

How a blackwork panel runs

Most panels take between two and five sittings spaced a month apart.

Session 01

Outline and structure

The whole shape goes on in one sitting so you can live with the composition before any fill happens. Usually four to six hours.

Four weeks

Heal and look

You come back so we can see how your skin took the line. Fill is planned around what we learn.

Session 02

First fill pass

Solid black in the largest areas. This is the longest sitting and the one that needs a real breakfast.

Session 03

Second pass and edges

Evening out the fill and sharpening the boundary. Some panels finish here.

Three months

Free touch up

One free visit for anything that healed unevenly. Booked in as a real appointment, not squeezed in.
