About the practice
412 Beacon Street, since 2009

Independent, and staying that way.

Three optometrists, one room each, and nobody upstairs setting a sales target. That is the whole business model, and it decides everything else on this site.

Why we opened

A chain gave me nine minutes per patient.

Aline spent four years at a high street chain where the appointment was nine minutes and the screen showed a frames target. She left in 2009, took a lease on Beacon Street, and set the appointment at forty minutes. Seventeen years later that is still the number, and it is the only reason this practice exists.

How we work

A

One optometrist, start to finish

The person who tests your eyes is the person who explains the result. No handover to a dispenser mid appointment.

B

No sales targets

Nobody here is measured on frames sold. If your current glasses are fine, we will tell you and replace the lenses only.

C

Prescription always released

Printed and emailed the same day, every time, whether you buy from us or not. It is your prescription.

D

Published prices

Every rate is on the pricing page. Nothing is quoted at the counter, and nothing changes once you have sat down.

Equipment

20/20
01

Wide field retinal camera

Photographs 200 degrees of retina without dilation drops for most patients. Images are kept on file so next year is a comparison rather than a fresh guess.

No drops
02

OCT scanner

A cross section through the retinal layers, which finds macular changes and glaucoma years earlier than a photograph can.

Cross section
03

Contact tonometer

Pressure measured with a drop of anaesthetic rather than a puff of air. More accurate, and nobody flinches.

No air puff
04

Corneal topographer

Maps the corneal surface for keratoconus and for fitting scleral and rigid lenses properly.
