What happens in a deep clean, minute by minute

What happens in a deep clean, minute by minute

A deep clean sounds bigger than it is. It is a slower, more careful clean below the gum line, done one side of the mouth at a time. Here is the hour, minute by minute.

Minute 0

Numbing first

We numb one side of the mouth, upper and lower. You feel a small pinch, then warmth, then nothing. We wait until you tell us it is numb, not the other way round.

Minute 10

Under the gum line

Fine instruments and a gentle ultrasonic tip clear the hard deposits from the roots. You hear a hum and feel water. If you want a break, raise a hand and we stop.

Most people say the numbing was the only part they noticed.

Minute 35

Smoothing the roots

Smooth roots are harder for bacteria to hold on to. This part is quiet, and most people tell us it is the easiest stretch of the hour.

Each side is done in its own visit, about an hour each.

Minute 50

What it costs

A deep clean is $210 for each side of the mouth, before insurance. Most plans pay a large share of it, and we tell you your part before we start.

The week after

How the gums feel

Expect tender gums for two or three days and some sensitivity to cold. A soft brush and warm salt water help. We call you a week later to see how it went.

Try it

Tell us if you would rather do both sides on one longer morning. We can plan it that way.
